February is Pet Dental Health month.
Pet Dental Health month was created by the American Veterinary Medical Association to highlight how important oral health is to the overall health, wellbeing and happiness of your pets.
Now its time to get a little bit controversial and shed some light on the 'Nation's favourite' dental chew for dogs.
Dentastix.
There's a reason you won't find them on our shelves, and we will gladly tell you why. After all an informed decision is always best.
First up, lets take a look at the ingredients:
Cereals, Derivatives of Vegetable Origin, Minerals (including Sodium Tripolyphosphate 2.8%), Meat and Animal Derivatives, Oils and Fats.
This is all very vague and it means that the manufacturers are able to change the ingredients from batch to batch without needing to change their labelling. This is particularly bad if you have a dog with intolerances or allergies as you'll never really know whats being used in the recipe.
Sodium Tripolyphosphate is an ingredient commonly used in household cleaners and washing detergents, it is also used in certain dog foods as a preservative and to help moist foods to retain moisture so that they appear fresher for longer. Although Sodium Tripolyphosphate is generally considered safe, it has been listed by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health as a possible neurotoxin and is widely recognised as a mild skin irritant. We therefor recommend steering clear of foods containing this as an ingredient, especially for dogs that are prone to skin issues.
Given all of this information we have made the choice not to stock these products, but that's not to say that we don't have better alternatives.
Of course brushing your dog's teeth daily is the best recommendation, but there are other alternatives to help keep your dog's mouth in tip top condition.
