Freshtrusion HDP - What is it?
As with all Bertie's dog and cat foods, we source our fresh meats and fish from farms and fisheries that we know and trust, who supply human-grade fresh produce, whilst ensuring traceability. Freshtrusion HDP is the unique process of cooking our fresh meat and fish ingredients in the presence of a natural enzyme, which digests (hydrolyses) the protein into a mixture of peptides and free amino acids.
This process increases the digestibility of bio-availability of the protein, improves palatability and reduces any allergenic potential of the protein, through what we like to refer to as the Goldilocks Principle.
Goldilocks Principle explained.
A peptide is a short-chain of amino acids linked by peptide bonds.
Instinctively, most people would assume that intact protein would be best for a dog to digest as it contains all of the nutritional elements together as one chain. Similarly, you might think that individual amino acids, broken down as small as possible would be easier to absorb.
However it has been proven in research studies that the ideal digestibility and absorption rates occur in small chain peptides.
Intact protein can be described as 'too much' and individual amino acids 'too little', however, small chain peptides are 'just right', you may even call these 'perfect peptides'!
The importance of peptides for allergy management.
By using enzymatic hydrolysis, proteins can be broken down into smaller peptides which can go undetected by the pet's immune system. This means that these proteins are now less likely to cause an allergic reaction.
Dogs can experience food allergies which can result in gastrointestinal and/or dermatological signs.
What makes our recipes stand out?
Unlike many of the popular Veterinary recipes already available on the market, our recipes are made with fresh meat, as a first ingredient, and are completely grain free. We believe that if you are purchasing a premium diet for your dog then it needs to contain premium ingredients!
